How To Get From Menorca Airport to Ciutadella

There's only a single airport in Menorca, the imaginatively named Menorca Airport (MAH)!

Small and situated in the southeast of the Balearic island, and sometimes referred to as Mahon Airport due to its proximity to the capital of the same name, it serves as the entrypoint for the vast majority of visitors to Menorca.

If your first stop is the city of Ciutadella, the main city on the western coast, then you have three options to make the journey.

In this short post, we've shared the essential information on costs, travel times, and connections so you can get from Menorca Airport to Ciutadella in the most convenient way possible for your budget and itinerary.

Once you’ve planned your route, plan your stay with our Ciutadella guide.

Bus from Menorca Airport To Ciutadella

Unfortunately there isn't a direct bus from the airport to Ciutadella.

Instead, you have to take the regular bus from the airport to Mahon (Maó) bus station, and connect there.

Here's how to do it:

1. Exit the arrivals terminal and go left to the bus stop - if unsure, you can find the helpful tourist information office inside arrivals on the left side before the exit.

2. You need to take the L10 bus to Mahon (Maó) - this is the only bus service from the airport (except private hotel transfers).

Departures are every 30 minutes, and travel time is 10-15 minutes. Find the timetable here or here.

Buy your ticket (€2.80) on board from the driver, cash only.

3. At Mahon bus station (Estació d'autobusos de Maó), the final stop, you'll find a row of about 20 bus stands (andandas).

Each has a little red and white sign taped up with its specific bus + schedule, but there are also two large screens at the far end with an overview of all upcoming departures.

You have two options for your connection to Ciutadella, each with the big red and yellow buses operated by TMSA:

L01 Maó to Ciutadella | With one departure per hour, this is the most likely option. Travel time is 1 hour, one-way ticket €5.75. Find the timetable here or here.

Bus Exprés Maó to Ciutadella (14) | Makes the journey in 45 minutes, but Monday to Friday only with limited services.

Your suitcases need to go in the storage underneath before boarding - this is unassisted.

In Ciutadella, the final stop is Plaça de la Pau (Google Maps), from where you're about a 10 to 20-minute walk from most places you're likely to stay within the historical centre.

Total Travel Time | 90 minutes, depending on connections

Total Cost | €8.55

Travel Tip // Have cash available to pay the bus drivers on board. They prefer exact change, won't accept any note larger than €20, and will only give change as much as 5x the price of a single ticket purchase.

There is a cash machine inside the airport, but it rips you off on the exchange rate and commission, so make sure to scrabble around your drawers or backpack before you fly to see if you've got some spare Euro coins or notes at home!

Taxis from Mahon airport operate under a strict licensing system and fixed prices, so there's no option for a cheeky Uber or negotiating a better price.

Therefore, before you exit the arrivals terminal, it's a good idea to check out the fixed price list which is taped up inside on a pillar (not immediately obvious). If you can't find it, ask at the tourism office and they'll point it out.

Collect A Rental Car

If you already know that you're going to need a rental car in Menorca, but planned on having a few carless days in Ciutadella first, then we recommend you reconsider.

The airport is the cheapest place on the island to pick up a rental, and the money you save on the taxi and the added convenience over the bus, would already make the extra day or two's rental payment worth it.

Also, although you don't need a car to enjoy Ciutadella, it'll open up your options to hit the coast and a few of our favourite activities just outside the city.

We recommend looking + booking via Rentalcars.com as it has the best selection of local and international companies on the island, and often has discounts and deals.

However, it's worth noting that several of the cheapest rental companies in Menorca aren't within the airport grounds. Instead, they collect you from a meeting point outside departures and take you on a 5-10 minute complementary shuttle bus ride to their offices.

This doesn't make a a huge difference to your total travel time.

Travel Time | 45 minutes drive + time to collect car.

Total Cost | Varies
