Riad Porte Royal

Why we like it | We may be a bit biased (after all, this is where we stayed on our first visit) but Riad Porte Royale is a genuinely wonderful choice. It marries traditional features with modern design, has a great little plunge pool to cool off in and a large terrace to enjoy breakfast or catch a bit of sun. Additionally, the staff are wonderful and will genuinely go out of their way to help you out.

Price |Doubles from just £65 per night

Riad matham

Why we like it | Pared-back luxury in a stunning 16th century house. The photogenic central courtyard with good-sized plunge pool is an added bonus and the on-site owner Thierry is exceptionally helpful.

Price | Doubles from only £56 per night

Riad Nayanour

Why we like it | Everything about this riad makes us happy! From the gorgeous pool, the clean palette, large rooms and modern design (without sacrificing all that makes Moroccan design so aesthetically pleasing), to the stunning roof terrace, excellent food and friendly staff.

Price | Doubles from £91 per night

Riad el Youssoufi

Why we like it | Located in a quiet section of the medina, Riad El Youssoufi is close to all local attractions but provides excellent respite from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech. It has a lovely patio area with small plunge pool, attentive staff and good food.

Price | Doubles from only £64 per night

Riad Kasbah

Why we like it | When it comes to Instagram, not all riads are created equal - and Riad Kasbah is punching high! With the sort of pool that will have you either breaking out the cheeky-bottomed bikinis for your own feed or diving in to chill off, this riad is all sorts of popular!

Price | Doubles from only €64 / £74 per night

Riad O2

Why we like it | All the usual amenities one would expect from a boutique riad, but O2's crowning glory is its beautiful roof terrace replete with 'Arabian night-esque' tents and lovely loungers. They also have on-site hammam.

Price | Doubles have increased quite significantly since we added this to our list so this is only a good deal if you can book quite far in advance.

riad adika

Why we like it | Large central courtyard with plenty of comfy, yet stylish seating, a plunge pool and light neutral tones throughout. Also has a fabulous roof terrace and really wonderful, large bedrooms.

That they have a family room makes this an ideal choice for those travelling with children.

Price | Doubles from £84 per night

Riad Dar Nimbus

Why we like it | This is another fantastic option for those on a stricter budget (in fact, we're amazed that you can get rooms so cheap here!). The riad has a really large and light patio, pool and great roof terrace, plus exceptionally friendly staff.

Price | Doubles from £50 per night

Equity Point Marrakech

Why we like it | Who said that young and budget-conscious backpackers have to stay in crappy hostels? This stunning riad has been styled, decorated and furnished to such a high degree, you really wouldn’t expect them to offer dorm beds for as little as £10. It offers a courtyard pool, an incredible roof terrace, really excellent dorms and even great privates if you need our own space, but want a social atmosphere.

Price | Dorm beds from £10 a night and privates from £49 a night

Another highly-rated hostel riad is The Central House Marrakech Medina.

Dar Attajmil

Why we like it | Okay, so this definitely comes in at the top end of our cut-off for 'affordability', but it's just so damn lovely! Small and intimate with only four rooms based around a cosy courtyard decorated with berber rugs and solid furniture (unusual for Marrakech). Lovely rooms, various classes available on-site, as well as a hammam, and access to a neighbouring hotel's pool.

Price | Doubles from £74 per night

Riad Chafia

Why we like it | With modern art and a striking design, Riad Chafia may not be everyones cup of tea (the bright colour palette used throughout has the potential to be a little overwhelming), but it's certainly a unique property on this list! Thankfully, it still retains an abundance of Moroccan features such as an exquisite terrace and traditional furniture but the owners have a wonderful sense of style.

Price | Doubles from £78 per night

Riad Le J

Why we like it | 1930s Art Deco design fused perfectly with traditional Moroccan features. It's stunning - but this is hardly surprising when you learn that Riad Le J is owned by two Italian designers. With only four guest rooms it provides a wonderful informal experience with a touch of luxury.

Definitely one of our favourites in this list!

Price | Doubles from £76 per night

riad UP

Why we like it |  The creation of Mallorcan designer Elsa Bauza, this delightful riad combines minimalist modern design with earthy Moroccan textures. Incredibly chic rooms, a cosy living space with large fireplace for cooler evenings, a plunge pool and terraces with panoramic views.

Their suites may stretch the budget a little too much, but the doubles are really well priced for the quality of the riad.

Price | Doubles from £100 per night

Azzouna 13

Why we like it | Besides the fact that this riad is quite frankly stunning (with incredible design features and artwork), its major selling factor seems to be its wonderful roof terrace and staff who will go out of their way to help make your stay the very best possible - it's quite impressive they don't charge more!

Price | Doubles from £84 per night

Riad Shambala

Why we like it | Opened in 2012, this boutique hotel has been lovingly restored by the owner Carlos. Employing only traditional building methods, materials and furnishings, he has created an authentic Moroccan Riad loved by locals and guests alike. The large bedrooms are particularly lovely, as are the little hideaway corners dotted throughout.

Price |Doubles from £60 per night in high season

Riad Dar Mouassine

Why we like it | With opulent design, this riad features a larger than usual pool and a fantastic roof terrace. Useful to know, it's also gay-friendly (sometimes difficult to find in Morocco).

Price | Doubles from €85 / £75 per night

Another highly-rated gay friendly riad is Dar Zaman - rooms come in a little over £100 a night which is why it’s not in this list, but the place is absolutely stunning!
