Where to Stay in Puerto Escondido | Best Hotels, Hostels & Airbnbs

With so many areas and accommodation options, deciding where to stay in Puerto Escondido can be tricky. So we’ve created this guide to do the hard work for you!

Puerto Escondido is not a huge town, but it’s easily delineated into several areas.

Each has their own distinctive vibe and set-up catering to different travel styles and types of trip.

Additionally, due to its increasing popularity not just amongst backpackers travelling through Mexico, but also digital nomads and North American holiday makers, there are literally thousands of accommodations across the various booking platforms; picking the right place for you and your budget can feel like a mammoth and daunting task.

With this post, after our two trips there and many hours of research, we’ve made finding the best place to stay in Puerto Escondido much easier for you.

As well as a clear overview of the pros and cons of each neighbourhood, we’ve selected the best hotels, hostels, Airbnbs, and apartments in each of them. So, whether you’re a vacationer looking for somewhere luxurious overlooking the Pacific, a backpacker looking for a cool, social hostel on the beach, or a digital nomad couple are looking for a stylish space near the surf, we’ve got you covered.

This is our guide on where to stay in Puerto Escondido, Mexico.

The Six Areas OF Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido is split by a busy highway, with the commercial town centre on one side and the coastal neighbourhoods on the other. Its airport is in the north-west of the town (maps), whilst its main bus terminals are on the highway through the town centre (maps).

The majority of travellers will choose to stay in one of the coastal neighbourhood areas, but it’s important to realise that they are quite separate and, due to the highway and spread out layout of the town, transport is usually required to link several of them together depending on where you’re based.

Due to this, you’ll probably spend most of your time within the area of your accommodation, unless doing a Puerto Escondido beach day trip or exploring.

For travellers, we think the town’s geography is best split into the following six neighbourhoods or hubs. We have shared more detail on them throughout the post, but to give you a quick overview, have summarised their ‘vibe’ below and shared our favourite hotel, hostel, and Airbnb in each.

La Punta | Where the cool kids stay with a great beach and hipster bars and hangouts

Where to Stay in Puerto Escondido

La Punta

Located at the far end of Playa Zicatela, when we first visited the city, La Punta was little more than dusty roads and a quiet beach. Fast forward a few years however, and whilst many of those dusty roads do remain, they’re now lined with boutique hotels and $10-a-cocktail bars - for many, this little hipster holiday enclave has become the place to stay in Puerto Escondido.

The calm waves make it an ideal place to learn to surf and the cove is picture-postcard perfect, but it is La Punta’s growing range of modern Mexican restaurants, generic cool coffee shops, eateries, hangouts and nightlife plus its stunning array of accommodations that keep the travellers (and digital nomads coming).

It is super important to note however, that this level of gentrification and amenities mean that this is not really the budget-friendly place it was once. Sure there are still hostels (we’re particularly fond of Real Juquilita), but the majority of accommodations increasingly falls into the ‘bougie’ category, with some of the most stunning Airbnbs and luxurious hotels that you’ll find anywhere in Puerto.

The majority of locations we’ve chosen for you are very close or on La Punta’s main street and its beach. More places are opening up in the area, but are situated a 10-15 minute walk from the beach so, wherever you end up staying, make sure check the map first to avoid disappointment.

Hostels & Budget Guest Houses

ADR Real Juquilita La Punta | This is where we stayed for our second visit to Puerto Escondido, and we were absolutely delighted with our choice. A 5-minute walk from Punta’s main strip, is was super quiet, and the privates were large and comfortable. It offers a small guest kitchen, a large pool and a great rooftop area for sunset viewing. It’s a very chilled hostel, and ideal for couples. Find out more here.

ADR Hostal Akumal La Punta | If you’re looking for a super-chill hostel that’s less bougie and a bit more travel-ly, check this place out. The rooms a bit more basic, but in a considered sort of way, there’s several colourful chill-out areas, a fully-equipped kitchen and shared rooftop. We’d stay here in a heartbeat. Find out more here.

If the above sounds like your cup of tea, be sure to check out Casa Punta as well!

Néctar: Hotel, Cafe, Cowork | A brand new hostel that feels more like a boutique hotel, Néctar - as the name would suggest - aims to attract digital nomads, but is proving popular with all sorts of travellers who prefer a more luxurious place to stay. The decor and design throughout is outstanding, with a gorgeous pool area and fabulous rooms and dorms. Note there is no guest kitchen. Find out more here.

Punta Kai Hotel & Hostal Boutique has a very similar upmarket aesthetic around a similar price point.

Che Puerto Escondido Hostel & Bar | La Punta’s ultimate party hostel, it’s relatively new and has been designed beautifully with a huge pool and decking area, on-site bar, fantastic dorms and gorgeous privates. Nightly entertainment, games and theme parties put on for guests. Find out more here.

And one more for luck - the beautiful and relaxed Casa OM Chakra.

If your hostel days are behind you but you’d prefer to keep your pesos for experiences, take a look at the brand new Flow de Lupe, a small guest house just five minutes from La Punta’s main strip. Large, tastefully decorated rooms, a guest kitchen and a garden area to chill.

Hotels

The most luxurious hotel in La Punta is the spectacular Casa To, particularly for those that appreciate brutalist architecture and contemporary design. It’s located far enough away from the centre to allow for a peaceful environment, but close enough to reach the beach and restaurants in a few minutes. All suites and rooms are exquisitely designed, with every element considered and complimentary to the overall aesthetic of the hotel. Other high points are the indoor / outdoor pool, the rooftop terrace and on-site restaurant. Find out more here.

If you’d prefer a more isolated location and don’t mind being a short walk from La Punta, be sure to take a look at the stunning Casona Sforza - an incredible place to relax and unwind.

ADR Casa de Olas Boutique Hotel | Whilst this hotel is firmly aimed at surfers, its aesthetic and vibe is very much Along Dusty Roads! Super chilled, with an open-air treehouse feel (at least within the communal areas), they rent out boards and bikes, offer a great breakfast, have a bar and and a pool, rooftop yoga classes and simple but super comfortable rooms. Find out more here.

ADR Raíz Hotel | Offering a luxurious boutique vibe at a lower price point, we actually booked a couple of nights at this new and beautiful hotel, drawn in my its effortless contemporary style and great location; unfortunately we had to cancel when our plans completely changed. Since then, it’s only grown in popularity - with the bar proving particularly popular! Find out more here.

Other hotels to take a look at include Aldea Paraíso, the adults-only Casa Bicachi and Casa Kuaa.

Casa Ohma | Just a six-minute walk from the beach, this designer guest house getaway offers a touch of barefoot luxury in it seven boutique rooms. Decorated in a gorgeous white and minimalistic palette, it’s light, bright, contemporary, with a pool, rooftop, guest kitchen and even a work area. You can find all listings here.

Plan / The Best Beaches in Puerto Escondido

Airbnbs & Apartments

Casa La Baba | Ideally located in the heart of La Punta (just 100m from the beach), Casa Baba offers six beautiful and airy rooms within a peaceful and tastefully decorated beach house - all with wonderful views over the ocean & the mountains. Within the immaculately designed and spacious grounds, you’ll find a swimming pool, a hammock space, and an open-air, fully equipped kitchen and dinning room. Find out all listings here.

It’s quite common for properties in Puerto Escondido to offer communal facilities, such as pools, gardens and kitchens (like the one above), at the same time as providing exceptional private rooms - like a guest house, but a bit more lux and more informal in nature. If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, the following are super popular and have exceptional reviews: Erizo, Casa Ereka, Casa Guajira,

ADR Bikini Beach House | This stunning, open-air, two-bedroom tropical penthouse is located in the centre of La Punta Zicatela, surrounded by palm trees and nature. Split across two levels it offers unrivalled views, treehouse vibes, a fantastic kitchen, and expansive dining and living areas. Find out more here.

The same host also offers the beautiful studio Maison de Rêve and Casa Coconut (a lovely two-bedroom cottage with private pool).

Casa VO | This avant-garde property with a brutalist edge looks more like a contemporary art gallery than a beach home. A feat of architectural beauty, it aims to invert the traditional model of a house with a garden and transform it into a garden with a house - it is adored by the design lovers. Find out more here.

ADR Casa de la Tierra | The most expensive option in this selection, Casa de la Tierra is a bamboo house nestled in the hills of La Punta, focussing on sustainable luxury. It offers breathtaking views of the sea and mountains, a fully-equipped kitchen, two incredible bedrooms, a private biopool and the chance to reconnect with nature without having to go back to basics. Find out more here.

Casa Vieques | Located on the southern side of La Punta’s beach, this gorgeous two-bed property is ideal if you want to be within walking distance of the action but in a more serene and relaxed setting. Beautifully furnished and benefitting from a fantastic kitchen (plus an abundance of natural light), its real draw is the included access to a semi-Olympic swim lane pool, plus La Foresta private beach club. Find out more here.

An excellent option for digital nomads and modern design-heads to check out is Casa WO.

Good / aesthetically pleasing Airbnbs below a certain price point are limited in La Punta, but the following caught our eye: Punta Mandarina, Beautiful La Punta 2 Bed with Pool, Loft with Private Terrace, Studio With Pool, Cute One Bed and Comfortable & Charming.

If you’re travelling in a group and need at least three bedrooms, we recommend taking a look at the following listings: Aloha Punta, Amazing Villa, Beautiful Five Bedroom House and Incredible Beachfront Home.

Mid-Zicatela

Whilst most ‘where to stay in Puerto Escondido’ guides will lump all accommodations along Playa Zicatela into the same category, having walked along this 3.5 kilometre beach (and the roads behind it) multiple times, it’s very clear that the location of your accommodation can have a very large impact on your experience of Puerto more generally.

So, although there isn’t an official start & end point for Mid-Zicatela (indeed, we’ve sort of made it up), a useful zonal demarcation is the beginning of the paved road, near some of the area’s most luxurious accommodation - like Casa Joseph Zicatela and Casa Mava - and ending here, where the beach becomes more developed, with a handful of local restaurants and basic beach clubs.

This particular section of Zicatela is hugely undeveloped, meaning it’s ideal if you want a super chilled vacation, far from the parties of La Punta. However, if you plan on eating out most nights or want to sample the best of Puerto’s nightlife, having to walk at least 20-minutes in either direction to find much life may be a little frustrating.

With the imminent opening of the new highway from Oaxaca city, the undeveloped open spaces along here, and the construction works we saw, our guts tells us that this section of town and beach will likely change quite rapidly. We expect more luxurious and large-scale accommodations like Casa Joseph Zicatela to open up in Mid-Zicatela in the coming years.

Hostels & Budget Guest Houses

Straw Hat Surf Hostel & Bar | Proudly referring to themselves as ‘the biggest surf hostel in Puerto Escondido’, only offering dorms, and being more focussed on giving guests a good time rather downtime, this new hostel won’t suit everyone. But if you’re looking for a fab pool area, on-site bar and the chance to meet lots of people, this may be ideal. Find out more here.

ADR Casa Daikiri | If the above hostel sounds like hell, a good nearby alternative is the relaxed and friendly Casa Daikiri. It’s a small place, offering a compact apartment perfect for a couple and a few dorms - all are decorated beautifully, with lots of little details, loads of super cute communal areas, a pool, guest kitchen and great reviews. It’s also got a great location in the border of mid and north Zicatela. Find out more here.

Casa Malayah | If this accommodation was located a little closer to La Punta, we’re fairly certain it wouldn’t be nearly as affordable - even their budget doubles are have a cute and considered design. They don’t have a pool, but the garden area is really nice. Plus, there’s a dog (always extra points for dogs!). Find out more here.

La Playita Beach House | Located a stone’s throw from the ocean, this highly-rated simple beach house offers 10 basic but comfortable private rooms, alongside a sun deck, a large pool, bar & lounge area, plus a well-equipped kitchen. Find out more here.

Also available on Airbnb.

Boutique Hotels

ADR Casa Joseph Zicatela | The epitome of luxury in La Punta, beachfront Casa Joseph Zicatela is a meticulously designed hotel offering contemporary aesthetics blended with typical Oaxacan charm - The price per night is far beyond many a traveller’s budget, but if you’re looking for an indulgent vacation location, this may well be it. Find out more here.

Casa Joseph Zicatela is also available on Airbnb.

Casa Mava | This gorgeous, new boutique hotel offers a variety of suites, villas and houses luxuriously decorated and furnished, around a 10-minute walk from La Punta. Some have private pools, but if you opt for one without, you still have access to a wonderful communal pool and sun deck. Find out more here.

Airbnbs, Apartments & villas

Home Travel Mexico | A collection of brand new studio apartments - ideal for single travellers or couples - all tastefully decorated in a minimalistic style (think poured concrete and natural materials). All benefit from a shared pool and rooftop. See all Airbnb listings here.

ADR Casa Rana | Located right on the beach, with uninterrupted views over the water, this one-bedroom, split-level apartment is meticulously designed with several balconies, and a beautiful kitchen - plus a private plunge pool! Find out more here.

Beautiful Beachfront Penthouse | This truly stunning apartment overlooking Zicatela beach has been carefully designed with natural harmony in mind, combining Transylvanian, Swiss and Mexican influences (!), with handcrafted woodwork throughout. The living spaces are open and welcoming, the bedroom has a luxurious four-poster bed, and there’s even a cooling plunge pool with clear ocean views. Find out more here.

North Zicatela

This part of Playa Zicatela, mostly built up alongside the busy Avenida del Morro, is the long-standing heartbeat of Puerto Escondido’s tourism trade, and also where you’ll find the best surf*

We stayed in this area on our first visit, gaining quite a negative impression, which unfortunately skewed our views on Puerto as a whole. Returning this year, for a more impartial take of the area, we can still say it's not quite our cup of tea!

But we know we’re not necessarily in the majority, with this being the destination of choice for many young travellers who want to take advantage of the bars and nightlife of Zicatela, and the surfers who can judge the swell from their rooms and be just a few steps from the water. For other tourists, it’s also convenient, with lots of amenities, more affordable accommodation, and right on the beach.

North Zicatela is also extremely well located to be able to access everything Puerto has to offer you, and means the rest of the town and its beaches are accessible on foot (in contrast to La Punta).

It’s important to note that the upmarket hotels along here do tend to be a little more traditional, and therefore skew towards an older demographic but conversely this is also an area that’s very popular with a younger crowd, with a number of popular hostels (like Selina) and an abundance of really well-priced Airbnb options.

*For experienced surfers only: Zicatela is not the place to try and learn! The current is strong, and the barrelling waves potentially lethal to the inexperienced - find out more in 13 Wonderful Things To Do in Puerto Escondido

Hostels & Budget Guest Houses

Huitzilin Hostal | This laid-back beach hostel is sociable without being a non-stop party, offers basic but comfortable dorms, a sunny outdoor pool area and communal areas surrounded by lush tropical gardens, alongside a large shared kitchen and shaded co-working area. Find out more here.

ADR Secret Beach Hostel | This new hostel, right amongst the action on Zicatela, is proving to be super popular - particularly with surfers and a younger traveller crowd. It only offers single-sex dorms, all of which have been really well thought out with lots of privacy and large, secure lockers. There’s no kitchen, but guests get a discount at the on-site restaurant and bar. Find out more here.

We personally have a bit of a love-hate relationship with Selina hostels (they often don’t live up to their lofty ideals), but given this one’s ideal location and the chain’s popularity, we couldn’t not mention Selina Puerto Escondido in this ‘where to stay’ guide. The facilities are good, and the rooms decent, but it’s really expensive compared to others in Puerto.

Hotels

Hotel Santa Fe | Located between the beaches of Zicatela and Marinero, this hotel is bursting with old-school colonial charm, has three pools within lush tropical gardens and an on-site restaurant. The rooms are large and comfortable, with tasteful elements of Mexican design. Would very much suit an older traveller in Puerto Escondido for a holiday. Find out more here.

Nearby Bungalows Santa Cruz (also available on Airbnb) offers a very similar vibe, albeit at a slightly higher price point.

It’s not quite our cup of tea, but if you’re looking for a traditional hotel with a resort feel, take a look at Hotel Rockaway. The nearby Hotelito Swiss Oasis and Surf Olas Altas are also extremely popular.

Airbnbs & Apartments

HippieChic Suites | One of the nicest Airbnbs in this part of Zicatela (but significantly more expensive too), this apartment is large, open plan and full of light with spectacular views out to the ocean through the massive windows and the balcony. It’s new, filled with bespoke wooden furniture and all mod-cons. You also get a discount at the nearby beach club. Find out more here.

ADR Casita | This clay-walled casita is small but super cute - and very popular! It’s a fairly small space, but has a surprisingly good kitchen for its size, and a little terrace, plus access to a shared garden and pool. Best of all, it’s just 50 metres from the ocean. Find out more here.

Want to be even closer to the beach? Take a look at this studio - the interiors are relatively basic but the door opens up right on to the sand!

Zicatela Beach A | You know how we said this area had some excellent value Airbnbs? Well, we weren’t joking - this decent little studio apartment is one of the cheapest we’ve found in Puerto, plus it’s modern and comfortable and has a little kitchen. Find out more here.

Other budget friendly options include: Private Bungalow and Studio Zicatela.

Playa Principal & Centro

In a destination that can sometimes feel overly gentrified, and like every service, restaurant, and accommodation is aimed solely at the wealthier foreign market, it’s vitally important to explore - and potentially even stay - in a part of the town that is wonderfully, unmistakably Mexican.

Staying in town centre of Puerto also means you’re closer to more affordable, locally-owned restaurants if you want to eat out, large supermarkets if you want to cook in your hostel, and transport connections for day trips - it’s potentially an ideal location.

There are three important things to note about staying in the centre in order to decide whether it’s right for your travel style.

Firstly, it’s primarily an area for backpackers, with a huge proportion of the town’s hostels found within these areas; there aren’t really any fancier hotels to speak of.

Secondly, whilst there are quite a few Airbnbs if you’ve been looking at listings elsewhere in Puerto Escondido, the options here will look a lot more traditional, and you’ll be dealing directly with local families rather than a letting agent; if you’re more CN Traveler than average traveller, this may not be the area for you. The good thing about this is that they are much, much more budget-friendly.

Thirdly, you’ll need to get taxis to/back from La Punta but you’re in a more convenient place to affordably access everywhere else in Puerto and beyond.

Plan / The Best Beaches in Puerto Escondido

Hostels & Budget Guest Houses

Tower Bridge Hostel | A great option is you’re looking for a youthful, sociable hostel in the centre. The dorms are a tad basic (they also have a small number of privates), but they offer a decent kitchen, a large pool and put on nightly activities. Super popular and highly-rated option. Find out more here.

ADR Casona H | Looking for a chilled hostel with peaceful vibes? The highly-rated Casona H will fit the bill. A collection of dorms and exceptionally good privates (freaking four poster beds!) set around a tranquil garden. Lots of places to hang out and a good guest kitchen. Find out more here.

ADR La Escondida H | Using an interesting mix of industrial and nature vibes, this super popular hostel offers clean, simple but stylish dorms and privates, a guest kitchen and a happy balance of party and chill. Find out more here.

As mentioned, Puerto Escondido is a very popular area for digital nomads to base themselves and there are lots of hostels catering to this fact. Two popular hostels with co-working spaces in centro are Puerto Dreams Hostel and Casa Losodeli & Coworking.

Other hostels in the Centro area worth taking a look at are Paziflora Hostel, Posada Mixteca H, Casa Santaella, and Nopalero Hostel (especially for its pool area).

Nomad Beach House | Looking for a hostel in this part of the city that’s right on the beach? Well, Nomad may just be perfect. Super chilled vibes, with basic but comfortable dorms and privates, a shared kitchen a common area under the trees, a restaurant, bar and - of course - a beach club. Find out more here (or see their listings on Airbnb).

Casa Solteca | This guesthouse reminds us of the sort of family-run, budget accommodation we stayed in so often at the very start of Along Dusty Roads. Sure, it’s nothing fancy, but sometimes all you need is a cheap, clean bed, a place to cook a meal and friendly locals to show you the way! Find all listings here.

Other guesthouses that would suit travellers that prefer to stay in locally-run places (but are no longer looking for hostels) include Hotel Careyes Puerto Escondido and Rincon del Pacifico.

Airbnbs & Apartments

Penthouse With Amazing View | The clue really is in the name with this one! This one-bedroom apartment is simple and practical but the reason it’s getting singled out is the outstanding view from the large terrace. Find out more here.

For more excellent views check out SEA and SUNSHINE and the super popular Bungalow Coral.

Friendly Apartment | This two-bedroom apartment, is colourful, clean and comfortable with everything you could need whether travelling or working remotely. Whilst it’s not particularly fancy, what really sets it apart is that the local hosts live next door and will go out of their way to help you - it’s a big reason why this place is so popular. Find out more here.

It’s perhaps a little overpriced for what it is, but if you’re looking for a unique place to stay, be sure to take a look at this two-bedroom house, the design of which was inspired by Gaudi.

Playa Manzanillo

Although this gorgeous beach and the neighbouring Puerto Angelito don't have accommodation directly on them, the hill overlooking Manzanillo now hosts quite wide array of boutique apartments and villas (plus a single, really quite fabulous hotel).

This is the spot for travellers or vacationers looking for something a little more considered in a secluded setting with endless views onto the Pacific Ocean, but still within easy walking distance of Puerto Escondido’s centre and a number of beaches.

Note that there are no hostels in this location.

boutique Hotels & guest houses

ADR Casa Cascada | This stunning adults-only boutique hotel is ideally located overlooking Playa Manzanillo, and offers a unique combination of modern industrial design and tropical luxury. There are ten rooms, and quite a communal vibe, with a large kitchen/dining area shared by guests, alongside a gorgeous infinity pool. Available on Booking.com and Airbnb - see all listings here.

Hotel Posada Playa Manzanillo | This simple, family-owned posada is simple, but clean, and functional. There’s no kitchen but it does have a pool and guests speak highly of the hosts. Find out more here.

Airbnbs & Apartments

Modern Oceanfront Villa | If you’re looking for a bigger place to stay in this area, this three-bedroom villa is our number one pick. Beautifully designed and decorated throughout with neutral tones and natural materials, it offers a large and stunning terrace with expansive views over the sea and a small swimming pool. Find out more here.

If you’re travelling with a large group and need even more space, take a look Casa Cal, a beautiful six-bed property (that’s even won design awards).

ADR Poolside Cabaña | An ideal choice for a solo traveller or a couple, this brand new studio is located in a palapa-roofed cabaña, just above Playa Manzanillo. Offers a full kitchen, ocean views and a shared pool - and it’s really reasonably priced. Find out more here.

Bungalow Rasta | This property reminds us a little of the caldera-view villas in Santorini, with incredible views and a minimalistic aesthetic. It definitely won’t suit everybody (its open nature means if you leave food out, you will get visited by racoons in the night) but it’s too good not to mention. Find out more here.

ADR Ocean View Villa | There are quite a few lovely two-bedroom properties here, but this is one of our favourites! Built into the cliff face on the tail of the Sierra Madre mountains, this penthouse villa has stunning views of the ocean, a large one-plan design, excellent kitchen, a large, sun-drenched private patio with plunge pool and a stunning shared infinity pool. Find out more here.

Casa Nopal | Our priciest recommendation near Playa Manzanillo, but one look at the photos and you’ll understand why we had to include it! Composed of two one-bedroom casitas (both two-storey with own kitchens), it’s ideal for friends or two couples travelling together who want their own space, but enjoy hanging out in the gorgeous private pool area. Find out more here.

There aren’t many cheap Airbnbs in this area of Puerto, but this one and this one cost less than £50 a night and have great reviews.

Rinconada & Bococho

These two areas are located to the the west of the city, towards the airport, nearby the two delightful beaches of Playa Bococho and Playa Carrizalillo. The former is pure, isolated paradise, whilst the latter is regularly touted as Puerto Escondido’s best beach.

Bococho is a lot more residential, with only a limited number of accommodation options available, whereas Rinconada is a lively little suburb in and of itself, with a long central strip behind the beach filled with restaurants, bars, yoga studios and coffee shops. For this reason, it’s popular with those that wish to have dining options on their doorstep, but wish to stay somewhere a little more chilled than Zicatela or La Punta.

When it comes to picking the right accommodation for your trip, due to Bococho’s proximity to Rinconada, these two areas should be considered together. Aside from being walking distance to excellent beaches, you’re also a short walk into the town centre from either!

Hostels & Budget Guest Houses

Vivo Escondido Hostel | This long-standing and highly-rated hostel has been given a bit of a facelift. It’s definitely not a flash-packer accommodation, but it has a pool, decent dorms (although we probably wouldn’t opt for the 10-bed), a handful of privates, a new kitchen, and decent communal areas. It’s a good mix between party and chill and just a few minutes walk from Playa Carazillo. Find out more here.

ADR Casa Conicarit | We’re not sure what category to place this gorgeous property (one of our favourites in this particular area), as it’s clearly catering to a younger traveller, and offers some dorms, but the rooms are so lovely that could easily be a boutique hotel! Located at the end of the Rinconada strip, it’s got a very modern look, with original artwork everywhere, fantastic common areas, a large guest kitchen, a rooftop area for yoga and a fabulous pool area. Definitely one to take a look at! Find out more here. Also available on Airbnb - see full listings here.

Carri Surf Studio | Located just off the Rinconada strip, this property offers a variety of light, bright and comfortable small studios and private doubles with excellent reviews. Super close to the beach, it offers a communal rooftop and most rooms come with a balcony. Find out more here.

We don’t normally recommend accommodations with reviews less than 8, but La Coral Beach House is in such a unique setting (above a secret beach and abandoned water park), than some of you may wish to consider it.

Hotels

Hotel Suites Villasol | If you’re looking for a resort style experience, this hotel is a good pick. The rooms are a little more basic than you may expect for 4* accommodation, but the prices remain reasonable for the quality. It’s got a large pool area, an on-site restaurant and - best of all - a private beach club on Playa Bacocho, just a 7-minute walk from the hotel. Find out more here.

Suites La Hacienda | This hotel is surprisingly well-priced for the quality of accommodation. The rooms are finished to a high-standard with lots of bright colours, and traditional Oaxacan design and the pool area, surrounded by lush tropical gardens is simply divine. It’s little surprise it has hundreds of excellent reviews. Find out more here.

Two other properties to consider if you’re visiting Puerto for a holiday are Villas Carrizalillo and Villa Maria Bed and Breakfast. Both are likely more fitting to an older demographic.

Airbnbs & Apartments

There are so many Airbnbs in these two areas of Puerto Escondido, and whilst we’ve personally looked at more than 100 listings to select our favourites, this selection represents just a handful of what’s available here.

ADR Unique Living Space | This one-bedroom property is just stunning. The living space is open-plan, and open-air (making the most of the tropical weather), with panoramic ocean views, and a contemporary aesthetic with lots of natural materials and tones. It’s around an 8-minute walk to Playa Bacocho and 15-minute walk to Carrizalillo. You also have access to the next door hotel’s pool. Find out more here.

Casa Rita | This newly renovated two-bedroom casita is super cute and very considered, offering beautiful artisanal features and quality furnishings. There’s a large well-equipped kitchen, indoor and outdoor dining / relaxation areas plus a gorgeous private pool. Both bedrooms are en-suite and spacious. Find out more here.

ADR The Garden Casita | There are quite a large number of affordable Airbnbs in this part of Puerto, but this little one-bed, two-story casita is probably our favourite! Located within a private garden 30 metres above Playa Carrizalillo, it offers a fully-equipped kitchen, various living spaces (indoors and outdoors), and is decorated and furnished in a contemporary style but in keeping with the tropical surroundings. In short, it’s bloody lovely! Find out more here.

We know we said the above was our favourite, but Casa Hibiscus, costing just a smidge more, comes a very, very close second. It’s also one of Puerto Escondido’s most popular Airbnbs, so if you like it, and see it available for your dates - book it now!

Other budget-friendly options - that are also very popular include: Tropical Pool Apartment, Mexican Suite, Beautiful Pool Bungalow, Tropical Garden Apartment, Top Apartment, Cosy Loft, Loft on the Pacific and Apartment Carizalillo Beach.

El Capitan | Every thought about staying in an Airstream? Well now you can! Decked out by someone who knows a thing or two about design, it gives all the hipster vibes. The outside shower just adds to the charm. As an added bonus, the hosts have an affiliation with the fancy hotel Villasol, so you can use the hotel’s facilities, including its excellent beach club. Find out more here.

ADR Casa de la Luna | This is the most expensive Airbnb in this selection - but this two-bedroom, oceanfront oasis absolutely deserves its price-tag. Centrally-located, it has been expertly remodelled with high-end furniture and details, and merges indoor and outdoor areas seamlessly, giving way to its own private mirador for views over the Pacific Ocean. Remote workers will be delighted with the high-speed internet and two dedicated workspaces. Find out more here.

The same host also has Casa Pelicano, just as beautiful but at a lower price point.

Award-Wining Design House | The clue is in the name! A stunning feat of modern architectural design, with a minimal industrial aesthetic, this three-bedroom property will be the dream place to stay for some (and the reason it’s so popular and well-rated). Set across multiple floors, it’s super spacious and every element is considered. The pool area is beautiful also, and it’s super close to the beach. Find out more here.

Other 3+ bedroom properties that caught our eye, and have excellent reviews include: Lovely House Near Carrizalillo Beach, La Siesta, Family Retreat, The Rasta House and Casa Bella Vista.
