Rincon ____ "You have come from the other side of the world, you could have gone anywhere, and yet you ended up here. Thank you." She wore her braids tied high, beaming at us from the other side of the counter, a local shop keeper of Rincon who was genuinely happy to have us here. Two ice cold cans of beers, a big bag of Colombia's lime flavoured crisps, and a sense that this was exactly where we should spend our last week in South America. Having just had a not-so-pleasant couple of days in Tayrona, this tiny fishing village was to provide the perfect panacea; a place almost too good to share. We talk a lot about overtourism, about visitor numbers that thrill a city's tourism board but terrify its residents, but spending time in Rincon, in a place that for now remains hidden at the end of a very bad road, we have become acutely aware of its importance. Rincon is at the beginning of its tourism journey, visited only by a small but growing number of the more intrepid backpackers seeking respite on the busy Caribbean coast. But it is us that need to act now to keep this sleepy village exactly as it is now. Use the Tulums, the Thailands and the Balis of the world as a lesson in how to do things better. We're not saying don't visit; that would be hypocritical. But if you do, then bloody look after it so that the people of Rincon continue to love travellers, as much as travellers love it. Colectivo ____ We were shattered, dirty and ever so slightly sunburnt. Every limb screamed out for rest, and after three days hiking through the Colca Canyon (one of the world's deepest) we were nearly home. All that stood between us and a hot shower back in Arequipa was a couple of hours in the back of a colectivo. We should have slept, but with a view like this, how was that possible? A smoking volcano to the east and countless rare vicuña along the road, the asphalt ahead stretched out for miles. Kept awake by music that is only heard in this part of the world - plus the driver's love for speed, dislike for brakes and disregard for sensible overtaking protocol - we chased the setting sun. For years to come, we will remember those days spent walking the trail. That ride back to the city, well, that is something we will remember forever. Those moments in between. Guayaquil ____ We wrote a blog post a few years ago about how there will inevitably be moments where people use our articles and guides - or draw some inspiration from something we post here - to only end up disappointed when they visit the place for themselves. We're certain this is going to be happen for Guayaquil. Despite (or perhaps because of) being the biggest city in Ecuador, it's only really on traveller routes if you're flying from it to the famous Galapagos Islands. Aside from that, it's got a - not unreasonable from what we've read - reputation as being a little bit dodgy and, in a country with so many wonderful outdoors attractions, it's completely understandable that most wouldn't go out of their way to visit it. However, that's exactly what we did; and on our stroll around the central city streets we were enthralled by the architecture, colour palette, the signs, the buzz. It's not somewhere we'd write about as a must-see place in Ecuador, but neither is it somewhere we think should be written off entirely. Drop ____ On our second journey with @homeofplymouthgin to celebrate the spirit of exploration (advertisement), we spent the morning walking together in the rolling hills and wild mists of Dartmoor. Every drop of water that makes Plymouth Gin is sourced from the lakes and reservoirs of this national park (which we thankfully could see a lot more of an hour or so after this photo was taken!), and the clean brisk air of the British countryside offered us a revitalising return to these shores after four months exploring in South America. In the afternoon, over hand-crafted cocktails back at the distillery bar, we learned about the history of gin and how pivotal the role of the sea, the navy, and journeys into the unknown has been to the city of Plymouth. Five ____ If you're heading on a South American adventure soon, here are five quickfire travel tips: 1. Always ask for the almuerzo / menu del dia. It's a set lunch meal of two or three courses served at most local restaurants that's cheap, filling, and usually quite good (they can usually make it veggie too). 2. Never ever ever go on a night bus in South America without a jumper, trousers, socks, and one other layer in your backpack. It might be 30 degrees outside, but the drivers love to set the air conditioning at Arctic levels for the whole journey. 3. If you ask for directions on a hike, people really really like to help you out and give an answer. This answer may not always be right though, and you won't necessarily realise this until you're more lost than you were before you asked. Download a map on your phone before you hike. 4. There is usually at least one bank in each country that won't charge you a fee to withdraw money at the ATM. You might need to try a few first though. 5. The weather in South America is not always the sunshine, heat, and blue skies which we readily associate with it. There are micro-climates within micro-climates and if you're visiting more than one part you need to pack accordingly.
