hostel review: blue pepper chapultepec, guadalajara

$120 per person, bed in 6-person mixed dorm w/shared bathroom}, 30th July-4th August 2014

This two-year old hostel was set-up by two entrepreneurial young brothers and their plans were well executed. The hostel is modern, clean and well laid-out with a young backpacker clientele.

Based in the Chapultepec neighbourhood, the hostel is in a safe, student area only five minutes walk to the restaurants, bars and street life of Avenida Chapultepec and a 30-40 minute walk to the historical centre. Buses stop near the hostel for both bus stations and central Guadalajara.

To reach the hostel from the new bus terminal, take the 709 for $12. Request to be dropped off at the intersection of Av.Vallarta and Chapultepec. From there, walk north along Chapultepec and take a left at the 7/11 store. Further up that street will be Alfredo R. Plascencia street, where you'll find the hostel.

From the old bus station, take the 604 to Av. Americas and the hostel is 2 streets away.

Best thing

If staying in a dorm, each bed has thick curtains covering the side and bottom of each bed offering privacy for guests. There are also very large lockers.

Worst thing

The toilet situation is a little confusing. The main toilet for our dorm was also in the hostel's shower room, so you could have three people waiting to use the showers whilst one person makes use of a toilet. The hostel wasn't full on our visit, but this was clearly an issue. There is another toilet near reception, but it's a shame they don't have one or two more, separate from the showers.

A little more ventilation in the dorms would be a worthwhile addition.

Value for money

Very reasonable for a dorm in Mexico's second-city. The kitchen is large and well-equipped and, overall, Blue Pepper delivers everything you'd hope for form a youth-hostel.

Recommended for

Young and social travellers. There is likely to be drinking in the courtyard more often than not and this is a hostel to make friends in.

Top tip

The 'Bodega' supermarket is extremely cheap and only 5 minutes walk away.

Kitchen, Wi-fi, hot showers, tourist information, 24-hour security, large lockers, social area, pool table, hammocks, Cable TV, outside space, free computer for guests. English and Spanish spoken.
