hostel review: la posada chetumal

$190 per person/per night basic twin private ensuite, 1st-2nd April 2014

It felt like living in someone's home (in a good way). Chetumal is only likely to be used as a 1-2 night stop-over for those arriving from/going to Belize and this is a pleasant enough base.

Downtown, a $20 taxi ride away from the ADO bus terminal but within a 25 minute walk of the 2nd class station (tip – hail a taxi from the next street over on Av. Insurgentes for this price, rather than outside the bus station). Situated in a residential area, it felt very safe.

Best thing

The solid and hearty homemade breakfasts.

Worst thing

As Chetumal is a border town, there is very little to do here, and certainly surrounding the hostel, your options are limited.

Value for money

Big room, free breakfast but given that this is not an idyllic seaside town or one filled with cultural activities, the price seemed a little steep.

Recommend for

Those planning a stopover in the town.

Top tip

Take a trip to Laguna Bacalar, a beautiful fresh water lagoon, a mere 45 minute bus journey from Chetumal.

Wifi, kitchen, free breakfast, satellite TV.
