hostel review: tres mundos, playa del carmen

Basic Double-Room w/bathroom, $190 per person/per night , 20th – 22nd March 2014

Unmistakably hippy, replete with a dread-locking service and the soothing chorus of duelling Spanish guitars.

4 blocks from the beach, Tres Mundos is thankfully far enough from the Haagen-Daaz and Starbucks experience of Calle 5 and 10, whilst being convenient to reach the beaches by foot.

Best thing

The splashes of colour that adorn the walls and floors are clearly reflective of an owner that has a passion for the unique and creative. That and the rooftop hammocks.

Worst thing

Breakfast is included, however prepare to be disappointed. A poorly operating toaster will dribble out your ration of two pieces of sweet bread to go with a not dreadful cup of coffee. To chuck in a couple of pieces of fresh fruit would cost the owners very little, but may actually leave their guests a little less ravenous by 9am.

Value for money

If the breakfasts were better, then it's fine. Our double room, whilst being very spacious, consisted of 3 bunk beds. A couple hoping for a more romantic experience will be disappointed and possibly left with bumps to the head.

Recommended for

Young, carefree travellers who want to enjoy the nightlife of Playa del Carmen.

Top tip

Buy additional food to go with your breakfast bread; the kitchen is actually not bad.

Wifi, kitchen, cafe, free breakfast (of sorts!), garden area, roof terrace.
